Diversity & Inclusion 2.0 Boot Camp

Are you a little stuck with your current diversity and inclusion initiative? Ready to take your initiative to the next level? Then you’ll want to attend one of the upcoming “Diversity & Inclusion 2.0: A 21st Century Approach” boot camps!

Designed for trainers and non-trainers alike, the three days will give you a powerful, new perspective and approach on what the work of diversity and inclusion (D & I) should be like in a 21st century world. Developed and facilitated by Dr. Steve L. Robbins, the training’s premise is that D & I work is fundamentally about understanding human behavior within a world full of human differences.

With that foundation, diversity and inclusion work gets beyond counting people and goes to making people count. That is, from an organizational standpoint, any D & I initiative focuses on how to understand and leverage human differences in order to achieve organizational goals.  You will see how D & I work can enhance three main areas that all successful organizations are concerned about. They are:

  • Employee engagement and enthusiasm
  • Creativity and innovation
  • Continuous learning and improvement
 

Underlying Dr. Robbins work and the training is the science that is often missing in many diversity and inclusion approaches. During the boot camp you will delve into the world of social and cognitive psychology as well as the exciting work being done in the realm of neuroscience and neuro-economics.  If this sounds a little daunting and too deep, don’t worry. Dr. Robbins has an uncanny, unmatched and humorous way of turning some times difficult (but insightful) concepts into easily understood and applicable actions. Not only will you learn a great deal, you will laugh just as much! Finally, for those trainers out there, you will be certified to conduct Dr. Robbins #1 requested and top-rated workshop on “Unintentional Intolerance.”

Here’s a sneak peak at what the three days will entail.

Day 1 8am-5pm

The first day begins with understanding why we must approach the work of diversity and inclusion from a human behavior perspective. We’ll take a look at traditional perspectives on diversity and how we can freshen those perspectives with creative and innovative approaches that employ the science of human behavior. For example, you will learn how a “social justice” framework for diversity differs from am “inclusion and innovation” framework.  You will begin to learn the brain science and psychology behind why we hang out with people like ourselves, and why we resist new ideas and perspectives (i.e., why we hate change). You will learn why our difficulty in addressing diversity issues is fundamentally about “insider” vs. “outsider” issues. You will end day one with a new lens for diversity and inclusion work – a fresh, new perspective for a 21st century world.

Day 2 8am-5pm

The second day is all about getting interactive and experiential learning.  You will gain a deeper understanding of human behavior that will help you to see why D & I work is really about leadership and communication skills for a diverse, complex and rapidly changing 21st century world. Working in small groups you will learn more about human behavior and motivation and explore in greater detail concepts like cognitive dissonance, attribution, anchoring, perceptual filtering, etc. You will discover the basics of how our brain operates (it loves to be lazy!) so that you can teach your self and others to overcome things like closed-mindedness and mindlessness. You’ll walk away from day two with the fundamental concepts that form the foundation of an “Unintentional Intolerance” workshop, and better armed with the science of that should underlie any work around diversity and inclusion.

Day 3 8am-4pm

On the final day, you will integrate all you have learned and put together your own version of an “Unintentional Intolerance” workshop. Again, collaborating with others in small groups, you will come up with your own examples and illustrations that will have you prepared to conduct a 60 minute to day-long diversity and inclusion training. Even if you do not intend to personally conduct a workshop, the final day will ingrain the concepts you should know to be a champion of diversity and inclusion in your own family, organization, community, etc. 

Cost

The cost to attend the three-day training is $1,950/person. Additional persons from the same organization will receive a $500 discount from the per person cost. For example if your organization sends three people the total cost would be:

First person  $1,950

Second person $1,450

Third person  $1,450

Total   $4,850

The above fee includes three days of training, course workbook, DVD (of Dr. Robbins conducting a training for reference purposes), certification, and permission to use Dr. Robbins’ course-related concepts and materials for internal organizational training purposes.  It also includes breakfast, lunch and all snacks during workshop days. The fee does not include dinners on workshop days or expenses related to travel (airfare, hotel, etc.).

Location & Times

Each training day will begin at 8am. Days 1 and 2 will end at 5pm, and day 3 will end at 4pm.

The boot camp will take place at the downtown Grand Rapids, MI training center of S.L. Robbins & Associates. Designed to enhance any workshop and meeting experience. Attendees will be invigorated and inspired by the colorful loft space of nearly 4,000 sq. ft. with state-of-the-art A/V equipment. During breaks you can even play table tennis, or the Wii.
